Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has fired at Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i after announcing that police dealt with criminal gangs during protests.

Addressing the press on Saturday, Matiangi denied claims that police had used live bullets during demonstrations but warned police had dealt with gangs who took advantage of the situation to loot property.

Some criminal elements took advantage of the situation to loot property. The police responded and normalcy has returned in the affected areas. There are no peaceful demonstrations and pickets happening. Criminal gangs...are not demonstators," Matiang'i said.

He added,“The government has to ensure that the lives and properties of Kenyans [are] protected. The right to demonstrate should be carried out in a peaceful manner and without destroying property."

However, former CJ seemed to have been irked by the statement and told Matiang'i that criminal gangs had a right to be arrested and charged in court.

Reports have emerged indicating that police resorted to using live bullets to quell protests in some areas injuring peope while others are said to have been killed.

In Mathare, a 10-year old girl was shot and killed during protests, but it was not clear who fired the shot.

Protests have been reported in Kibera, Mathare, Siaya, Migori, Kisumu and Dandora.

On Saturday, the NASA brigade led by James Orengo alleged that 100 people had been killed in the protests but never gave evidence to support the claims.
